hard drive issues, need help
Hi I have this hard drive in an external case: http://www.westerndigital.com/en/pro...38&language=en
So it was working fine this weekend and when I went to turn it on (manually by a button on case) today it starts up fine, I can hear the disk spinning, but my computer tells me that the hardware I am trying to run is not functioning properly and can not be installed.
It is connected to my pc using usb 2.0 and when it was working it would bring up the autoplay which is typical of all externals but it doesn't do that anymore. The drive is formatted and has roughly 70% free space.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have a lot of important files backed-up on this hard drive.
Thanks

One suggestion is to take it out of the case and plug it into your PC the old way.
It might just mean a faulty case, which can be solved with $10-$15.

You might also want to check that all connections are secure in the case (nothing loose or only partially plugged in). It's probably best that the hard drive is set to master and not slave or cable-select (not sure on that one though). If the external case doesn't have it's own power supply, you may need one. If it has one, it could be bad or not big enough.

Ok I tried hooking it up to my roommates computer and it worked fine. So I tried it on my computer again and I got the same thing, nothing. I turned up my speakers to see if I heard any sounds but didnt get anything; I waited for 1 minute still no sound.
I have windows XP SP2 OS
It has to be a software issue then which I am clueless on how to fix. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

a few things you might want to try.
reinstall drivers (even though it's xp)
d/l (and run) the HD diagnostic tool from support (for your HD model).
what happens when you go:
Start---->Control panel---->System---->Hardware---->Device Manager
Do you see any little yellow -!- Icons?
if it works on a friends, it's prolly not a HD prob. it's on your end
